“I have gotten many of these, since my phone numbers are all over the internet, it can be very scary for someone who doesn’t know better. My mother, bless her, would be one of the people calling them up giving out her information too, so this makes me pretty passionate about helping people.” – Thomas J

If you received a call, and you know it is not real, with a different number, message or call me and give me the details so I can post it here and continue helping people to not get scammed or scared.

What A Real IRS Call Will Sound Like

The IRS will never call and say you are under investigation or that the police are after you. They are not allowed to discuss that information over the phone. They will say “We’d like you to come down to our the IRS office, there are some things we’d like to talk to you about regarding your taxes.” The real IRS will send you a letter first, for privacy reasons and only call as a second to last resort. They will state their name, and their IRS Member ID number.

The real IRS will mail you a letter first, when they cannot reach you by mail, they will try calling.

Fake IRS Collection Job Lands India ‘Scam Center’ Workers in Jail

On October 7th, about 700 people were arrested in India for working to scam Americans, many of them thought they were working for the US Government, and did not know they were even doing anything wrong. People from India are generally kind, hard working and honest, which makes them easy prey for big greedy businessmen. – Read more here

Police say workers posing as tax collectors earned bonuses for every dollar stolen from U.S. victims

Police escorting men who they said were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of tricking Americans into sending them money by posing as U.S. tax officials, at a court outside Mumbai.

I’ve talked with the IRS many times about these, and always expose the fraud of them as much as possible. The fact that they are scamming poor people like, my mother, is wrong.

US Internal Revenue Services in Kansas | Tax Department

  • Address: 555 N Woodlawn St, Wichita, KS 67208
  • Phone: (316) 651-2100
  • Hours: Mon-Fri – 8:30AM–4:30PM (Close Sat/Sun)

The IRS is slammed with these type of calls to verify if the scams are real notices, the government is currently investigating leads to take down all these scam call facilities. They are not just in India.

Why Was I Notified by The IRS?

The IRS sends notices and letters for the following reasons:

  • You have a balance due.
  • You are due a larger or smaller refund.
  • We have a question about your tax return.
  • We need to verify your identity.
  • We need additional information.
  • We changed your return.
  • We need to notify you of delays in processing your return. Read more about Understanding Your IRS Notification.

What The Bible Says About Fraud

Fraud is stealing, lying, and breaking the law all in one. Have you been committing fraud? Did you know lying on your tax return is a form of fraud. All fraud is sinful and no one who unrepentantly continues in it will enter into Heaven. How can someone thank God for treasures brought on by dishonest gain? It doesn’t matter if you think it’s fair or not.

Proverbs 20:17: Food gained by fraud is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth is full of gravel.

Don’t say to yourself, well Uncle Sam always rips me off. God has nothing to do with evil. Scripture says “woe to those who call evil good and good evil”. Scams and fraud are brought on by the love of money and the lack of trust in God. Rather than trying to gain quick money which can easily disappear fast, let’s gain little by little with hard work. We should never live like this sinful world, but we should live a life of integrity. (Read More of that here)

What to do if someone has wrongly accused you of fraud when you know you didn’t do something? I’d like to refer to this quote:

Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too. — Will Smith

Thank you for this post. Today, May, 2nd 2017,my friend received several of these calls. It didn’t sound right to me, not to mention the non-native English, so to the internet I went, and there you are! Thanks again! Is there somewhere official that I can report this to?

There is no where to report it that I know of. I called IRS asking the same thing. Thanks for mentioning it though.

I’ve received 3 calls in the last month. Found this on the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/consumer-alert-scammers-change-tactics-once-again):

If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS and asking for money or to verify your identity, here’s what you should do:

If you don’t owe taxes, or have no reason to think that you do:
• Do not give out any information. Hang up immediately.

• Contact TIGTA to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page. You can also call 800-366-4484.

• Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Use the “FTC Complaint Assistant” on FTC.gov. Please add “IRS Telephone Scam” in the notes.

If you know you owe, or think you may owe tax:
• Call the IRS at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you.

Received threatening calls from 830-253-2227. He claims to be Sam Wilson with the Tax Investigation Team. He is downloading your file and sending it over to the county sherriff within the next hour. Said to wait for the sherriff to come lock you up. Could get 5 years in prison. Tells you that your on a recorded land and don’t interrupt him. He is going to inform your creditors and your employer of your actions. Your property has been seized, bank accounts frozen, drivers license have been suspended for 5 years. Stop running from your tax issues. He knows your phone number, name, and address. Kind of scary.

They tend to use a phone number with local area code. I almost fell for it since it’s first time I received this. Lucky I checked online and found this. Thank you! The number they used is 818-676-9383. I usually search online for the phone number first to see if it is reported as scam call.

The number I received was 239-320-3832. Who on Earth says “cops” in a “serious” message from the IRS. Oh and the IRS only communicates through the mail for the first contact.

This was very helpful, thank you very much! I just received this message from an automated system. I hung up right away during the first sentence. Then I was nervous so I called the number back. The individual that picked up had a thick Indian accent and seemed to conduct himself well and even referred to himself as an officer. He wanted to know my full name and I was very distrusting of it so I hung up without providing anything. Thank you for outlining all of this, it helped a lot.
